I always figure I can’t call myself a true beekeeper until I’ve kept the little blighters for a full season – if they don’t make it through the winter I could just turn out to be a very slow bee murderer.
I’ve was convinced my outdoor bees didn’t make it – they stored bugger all of their own food last year and though I fed them, with a foot in a cast for three months I haven’t been able to make it out to the hive, let alone pick it up by a corner and play guess the weight of the stores ( a skill known to bee keepers as hefting). With the mild weather they were out and about at the end of last year but I haven’t seen them since December
I had to know what’s going on and whether I needed to buy more bees so on a sunny afternoon last weekend I cautiously opened the hive and had a peek. Nothing on the top layer – just empty comb, so with a sick feeling rising in my stomach, I cracked open the next super to be greeted with sleepy, but angry bees ☺
